The Achilles tendon is the tendon at the back of the ankle, connecting the calf muscle (gastrocnemius) to the heel (calcaneus). Overloading or overusing a weak, fatigued or tight calf muscle can result in inflammation, micro-tears or compromised blood flow and subsequence strain of the Achilles tendon.
It is advised that loading volume on the tendon and intensity is immediately reduced with rest, icing, and taping or strapping and massage therapy utilised to relieve symptoms in the early/acute stages.
A progressive strengthening programme, including effective stretches is crucial for recovery.
